Jose Mourinho names 25-man Manchester United squad for Community Shield clash with Leicester
Anthony Martial was a doubt for Sunday's match having missed training on Friday but has travelled with the rest of the squad
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has named a 25-man squad for Sunday's Community Shield clash with Leicester, writes Samuel Luckhurst in the Manchester Evening News .
Anthony Martial was a doubt for the game having missed training on Friday but has travelled down with the rest of the squad.
Left-back Joe Riley trained with the first team with Mourinho presumably looking for a left-wing alternative should Martial not be passed fit.
Unlike Louis van Gaal, Mourinho has travelled with more than the minimum 18 players clubs are permitted to name in their matchday squads.
Mourinho was keen to draw a line under the Van Gaal era during his press conference on Friday.
"My teams are different to Mr Van Gaal's teams," Mourinho said. "I want to make it clear that I am not saying my teams are better or have better ideas or my principles of play are better. Not at all.
"My teams are different to Mr Van Gaal, and it is a difficult situation to change the dynamics.
"It would be easier for me to have 20 new players and start from zero. For two years, they had some principles of play that are not mine - clearly, they are not.
Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial have both been included in the squad
"But the players are players and, without losing their identity, they always try to adapt to what the manager wants. "Of course, after two years of work, there are things in their brain that are automatic, and that is difficult to change. But we are working hard and the players are trying everything.
"Of course, we make mistakes and we are far from perfection, but they are giving everything to adapt, and step by step my team is going to be my team
Mourinho has a fit 25-man squad to choose from on the eve of his first competitive game in charge, although the Portuguese voiced his concerns over their condition for next week's Premier League opener at Bournemouth.
"Sometimes I get a bit confused with the meaning of fit, of what it is to be fit, to be fit is to be ready to play or to be fit is the top of your performance level," he said.
"The top of the performance level, not at all, not individually, and even less collectively. If be fit means no injuries or a small number of injuries and people are ready to play football at a good level, I think so and next week will be a good working week for us.
Monday day off and then we play just Sunday, so we have from Tuesday to Sunday, one more work, one more week of work, so I think we are going to arrive in a good condition."
Mourinho was asked if there were any alarming parallels with Chelsea's preparations a year ago but stressed: "I don't speak about my previous club, not at all."
