Abdul Rahman Baba having Schalke medical as Chelsea exit looms

The Ghana left-back is on the brink of a return to the Bundesliga

Chelsea defender Abdul Rahman Baba is fast closing in on a switch to Schalke 04 and is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a season-long loan.

According to Sky Sports, the 22-year-old is in the process of completing his medical checks on Sunday afternoon with an exit from Stamford Bridge now looking to be a formality.

The Ghana international only moved to Chelsea a year ago—signing a five-year contract after joining Jose Mourinho’s champions from Augsburg.

He has struggled to truly impress for the Blues, finding himself firmly behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order in West London.

He managed 23 outings in all competitions—of which 15 came during Chelsea’s miserable Premier League campaign—but while there were flashes of his offensive class, he hasn’t always looked convincing defensively.

However, despite travelling with the Pensioners on their preseason tour, the Black Star clearly hasn’t done enough to impress incoming coach Antonio Conte and appears set to return to the Bundesliga on a temporary basis.

Baba has considerable experience of German football, having represented Greuther Furth for two years after leaving Asante Kotoko before moving to Augsburg in 2014.
